Spooky Retreating

In March, 2006 We heard Spooky yipping and yapping in the back yard.  When we looked out there were two ducks in the pool.  Spooky was wildly excited.  He was running around the pool in a frenzy.  Finally the ducks flew away.  They were back again the next day and the scene started again.  However, as time went by and the ducks returned day after day, Spooky got use to them in the pool.  When they got out of the pool to eat or sun, he would promptly herd them back into the water.  If they got too close to the edge of the pool where he was standing, he would retreat to a safe distance.  It was obvious that he didn't really know what to think of these unexpected guest.  This is his back yard.  They were intruding on his territory.   But when he chased them, they would retreat to the center of the pool and there was nothing he could do.  He wasn't about to go into the water after them.  After about two weeks of this routine, one evening the male duck sat up on his tail in the water with his neck stretched to the sky.  It was like he heard a signal and was compelled to answer the call.  They flew over the back fence and this is the last we seen them.  They were two young ducks, male and female, courting out on their own, but still aware of the larger flock.
